3 Benefits I Bet You Didn’t Know about Water Fountains!

People benefit from the therapeutic effect of gardening on a daily basis.  Once complete a well designed garden can be a great place for resting after a long day at work where you can potter or just sit quietly and be.

But did you know that your garden can be even more beneficial to your health with just one small addition? A water fountain –  Aside from being beautiful and adding a huge wow factor to an indoor or outdoor living area, here are  3 other top benefits you too can gain from adding a water fountain to your garden

1. The Relaxing Sound of Water

The relaxing and soothing sound that water makes it one of the best natural stress therapies there is. I myself experience and witness this therapeutic effect on a daily basis.

Spending time amongst our water fountains here at Cherry Road Nursery is something I make sure I do every two hours to give myself a break from writing Cherry Club emails and office work. This regular break refreshes me, mind and spirit from the long stints on the computer hidden away in the back office.

My personal favourite method to reset and recharge is to leave the office for around 10 minutes, making my way to where our fountains range is displayed under our shade plants awning – and it’s never long before I bump into a customer doing the same.

But it’s not just me; even the world’s best authority on peace harmony and relaxation techniques the Buddhist monks take advantage of running water sounds using this to aid in their meditation. This is why water fountains, similar to our Buddha sitting fountain, with its soft and gentle water sounds are common fixtures in their temples.

Some studies also show that the sound of running water is very effective in relaxing people’s minds, so much so, it is even used to help people with sleeping problems. Personally, I think this has a lot to do with water’s ability to drown out other noises. The sound of water may seem gentle and mild, but it makes a huge difference even if it’s only in the background and you’re not actively listening to it.

If you can’t escape to nature for some stress relief, why not bring nature into your home by introducing a water fountain?

2. Water as a Natural Humidifier

The presence of water alone instantly adds moisture to the air, helping to purify it. This means that water fountains can also serve as a natural humidifier and purifier. They are quite helpful for those who live in environments that are very dry and prone to airborne road or coal dust, as well as those who have allergies.

Many people use artificial humidifiers for this purpose. But humidifiers can also invite mold and mildew into your home. This is why natural humidifiers, such as water features, are so much better for your home and for your health.

Your courtyard or indoor plants will grow better in this dust reduced more humid environment. Dust can have a massive effect on a plants ability to photosynthesize covering the leaf surface and reducing the light that each leaf can absorb. A major concern in low light indoor or courtyard garden situations.

If  the humidifying effect of a fountain is what you seek, I recommend you get a water fountain that has lots of flowing water, just like our 2-tier black fountain in wrought iron look. Fountains like the tiered fountain with lots of water movement are also the very best types for drowning out unwanted neighbourhood noises like roads and building works.

3. Water inozation: helps with depression and mood?

If you’re wondering what negative ions are, they are oxygen atoms that are charged with an extra electron. Why they are great is because they clear the air and prevent hazardous airborne particles from forming in your home. The presence of flowing water in your garden or even in any indoor area helps produce negative ions. This ionizing effect is also known to help increase the production of serotonin in the body. If you’re not familiar with serotonin, it is the chemical that regulates our mood. If your serotonin levels are low, you will be at a higher risk of depression.

This is one of the reasons why I recommend that customers consider indoor water fountains – for their home or even office. Most of the electronic devices we use on a daily basis can reduce the amount of negative ions in the atmosphere. One great way to counter act this to introduce a water feature to the room. Many of our freestanding fountains, such as the triple column water feature, can be neatly positioned in designated spots indoors.

Water fountains don’t just decorate our gardens; they also protect our physical and mental health and well-being. Aside from calming the mind, they also humidify, purify and ionize the air in our homes and gardens.

If you’re looking to buy a water fountain, head over to Cherry Road Nursery to check out our extensive range of water features where we have over 80 fountains set up and running.

I love that water fountains have such a nice, soothing sound about them. I would love to put one in either my home, or outside in my garden. That way I can enjoy the peaceful sounds of the water, and I am sure it will help me to relax. I am sure that would be beneficial for everyone!

I thought it was really interesting how the article mentioned that water ionization can also help with depression and mood. I know I find the sound of running water to be soothing, but I didn’t know it had an actual physiological benefit. My wife likes to garden, so would having an outdoor water fountain in the garden provide the same benefit?
